Grays Summer Celebration - 15th May
Grays holds a fantastic collection of Staffordshire pottery that spans a large period of time. From Staffordshire spaniels and figurines to Majolica and Toby jugs, you’ll be sure to find something classic or unusual to suit both your taste and budget.
Staffordshire pottery is known for being produced in and around the Staffordshire area, with the main area now recognised as Stoke on Trent. In this area of England, clay was in great supply and potters were able to create moulds and duplicates of fine porcelain, for modest sums. Production started from as early as 1600 and still continues today.
Early Staffordshire pieces often portray figures and exciting events going on at the time. This includes Parliamentary leaders, new figureheads and biblical subjects. Over the years, these forms and shapes changed with the times and continue to leave collectors with a vast selection to choose from.
Well known brands of Staffordshire pottery, including Minton, Doulton, Spode and Twyford can be found amongst showcase dealers in the Mews including David in Showcases FS9 and V12, as well as Walter Schaetze in Showcase V13.
Older quintessentially Staffordshire figurines and other decorative potteries dating from the early part of the 19th Century can be found within Mary Jane Priebe’s collection in Showcase FS5, Mary Wellard’s collection in FS6 and new dealer Madelena Antiques showcase V9.
Britannia a long established dealer at Grays in Stand 325-327 and Madelena Antiques also offer a fantastic collection of Majolica, while Deco-Etcetera in V16 stocks a lovely range of Art Deco Staffordshire pieces including some rare items by Susie Cooper and Shelley.
